Who is Kiyoshi?

This is a photo of Akemi Shibata & Fuji Enomoto, my biological & non-biological obachans (japanese for grandmother) respectively. Here they are in their Japanese gift shop on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC in the 1960’s. They immigrated from Japan, worked many different jobs, taught themselves English, and eventually came together and started their own business. They are no longer here on earth but they are always with me and inspire me every day.

Kiyoshi was the name of an ancestor of Akemi & I, who had a business in agriculture in Japan. I like to think that as a farmer & medicine man, he would be pleased that his descendants are carrying on traditional and holistic wellness practices & land stewardship.

We are a woman-owned apothecary based in Maryland, USA and everything available in the shop is made with love in small batches. Our offerings include: tinctures, dried teas, extracts, natural skincare, DIY kits, educational material, & more! We hope to offer herbal education & workshops for all ages, community building opportunities like plant walks and tea tastings, and 1-on-1 herbal consultations down the line! We prefer to grow herbs ourselves when possible and are keen to support local, trusted, plant stewards and farmers.

Plant medicine is the people’s medicine.

Kiyoshi Botanicals believes that the plants around us are our sacred guides and sweet friends. We want to engage with our community around healing and growth, cultivate curiosity, and hold space for creativity. We’re interested in crafting plant remedies that provide holistic wellness strategies, help friends feel empowered when it comes to their health, provide resources that inspire further investigation, and foster harmonious connections between plants & people.
